"Preparing the Nets"

Watercolor, 28" x 22"

As I walked along Provincetown's MacMillan Wharf, I saw three fishermen, all dressed in fishing garb. Had they just returned from a trip out to the Atlantic, or were they getting ready to depart? Whatever, they immediately caught my attention, as they worked the nets around this huge wheel that had just deposited tons of scallops, or was about to drag for them off the ocean floor. The beige and brown tones of their intricate equipment, the wheel they were winding their net around, the one small green net amongst all the brown - even the perfect composition as they worked, came together. I knew this would make an exciting and complicated painting - one which was just waiting for me to compose.
