“Steam on the Waterfront”

Oil, 24” x 36”

“Steam on the Waterfront” cir. 1956 New York N.Y., represents an era of American history when the drama and romance of steam power was found throughout our daily experience. Steam ships like the one depicted here (The Adventurer, American Export Lines ) were a common sight being escorted and nudged into port by two or more steam tugs ( in this case New York Central Railway), providing power and scale to the unfolding magic of the moment. A dock switcher works the rugged wharfs and shuffles cargos from ship side to warehouse, where rail cars will load up and carry the freight and produce throughout the nation.
