“The Lightning Rounding Cape Horn”

Oil, 26” x 40”

Painted for my first New York exhibition in 1967, this vessel was one of the famous quartets of clipper ships designed by Boston’s Donald McKay. Launched at East Boston in 1854, the Lightning, commanded by James Nicol Forbes, set a record fast time on her maiden voyage to Liverpool. The speed of these new clipper ships established America’s preeminence in naval architecture and made her the envy of every maritime nation throughout the world.
