“Thacher Island Lights“

Acrylic, 18" x 24"

The Twin Lights on Thacher Island are just off Gloucester and Rockport Massachusetts. They can be seen from any boat rounding Cape Ann or from Bass Rocks. They are to my knowledge the only twin lights on the East coast. Tall granite sentinels, they seemed ominous and possibly haunted. I recently found some old photographs of the island and the families that lived out there as a part of the Life Saving Service. One photograph, taken in 1904 of 3rd Assistant Lighthouse Keeper William M. Reed with his wife and two daughters captured my interest. So I composed them in this lifesaving boat with the Twin Lights in the background. I figured they had to get out there somehow.
