Sometimes flight is wiser than fight. Discretion being the better part of valor, with darkness approaching, pursuit and capture may be avoided, as long as sails, masts, and rigging survive the dash to safety. A sail sighted at sea in the days before sophisticated communication, one could be facing a foe pretending to be a friend. There was always a risk of encountering hidden armaments fueled by courage.
