Alana M. Knuff, ASMA
Oil, 30” x 40”
I live in Charleston, South Carolina. Here, the low country is etched by harbors, rivers and creeks flowing into the Atlantic Ocean. These offer a bounty of inspiration to an artist drawn to the sea. This painting was done in my studio from a series of photos I shot along Shem Creek. Shrimpers raft together along the dock waiting for spring. This is a painting of temperature contrasts – the warm winter sky meets the cool water, and cool juxtaposes warmth with the tethered boats. The cool passages convey winter and the warm colors, the anticipation of spring. In 2013 the Portrait Society of America awarded this painting an Honorable Mention under the Landscape category in the Members Only Competition.
