The little heron began some time ago as a study of the little herons found here on the lagoon. I often do small 3D sketches, or maquettes, for larger pieces. Harbor Branch Oceanographic
Institute chose it as this year's lifetime achievement award, and the flying heron relief for last year’s award. There are many herons and cranes here at the salt, brackish, and fresh water’s edge, so there are many subjects. I spend many hours studying, sketching and photographing them. This gives me a good understanding of the birds used in the sculpture. This little heron was particularly fun because a good friend from HBOI was very excited about the piece for their award. It is an edition of 20, and several are reserved for HBOI.
