"American Phoenix: The Great Republic”
Oil, 20 x 30-inches
Designed by legendary naval architect Donald McKay, the Great Republic was the largest wooden clipper ship of all time. While fitting out in New York in December, 1853 a pierside fire destroyed her as well as several other vesseks. Burned to the waterline, the Great Republic was rebuilt with a much smaller rig. She continued in service until 1872.
